Next-Gen Toyota GR Supra: Turbo Four-Cylinder Hybrid Power Confirmed?

The curtain is falling on the current Toyota GR Supra A90 Final Edition, marking the end of a five-year run. But fear not, Supra enthusiasts! Toyota has confirmed a successor is on the way, and exciting details about its powertrain are emerging.

A Hybrid Future for the Supra

Initial expectations pointed towards a fully electric sixth-generation Supra. However, Toyota’s “multi-pathway” strategy now suggests a different approach. Reports from Best Car in Japan indicate the next Supra will likely be powered by a newly developed Toyota turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Crucially, this engine is expected to be paired with a hybrid system.

Toyota Power, No BMW Parts

This represents a significant shift. Earlier rumors suggested a BMW-sourced engine. Instead, Toyota will be using its own in-house technology, giving them complete control over the development and tuning of the powerplant. This 2.0-liter engine, announced in May 2024, is designed for both electrification and compatibility with carbon-neutral fuels, offering Toyota significant flexibility in meeting future emission regulations.

Performance Potential

In its non-electrified form, this engine is projected to deliver up to 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. The addition of a hybrid system promises to significantly boost these figures, potentially exceeding the 429 hp (320 kW / 435 PS) of the current A90 Final Edition's 3.0-liter six-cylinder. While this might not match the lauded sound of BMW's straight-six, the hybrid system’s added performance is an enticing prospect.

A racing variant of this engine is even rumored to generate a staggering 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS).

Transmission and Drivetrain

The hybrid system is reportedly a self-charging configuration, integrating a motor-generator with a clutch between the engine and transmission. An eight-speed or ten-speed automatic transmission is anticipated, though Toyota's exploration of simulated manual gearboxes for a more engaging driving experience is also noteworthy.

The next-generation GR Supra is expected to maintain its rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration.

Design and Chassis

Toyota will have complete control over the new Supra's design and chassis tuning. Early indications suggest an evolution of the current model's styling, with sharper lines and a more aggressive stance.
