2025 Toyota RAV4: Subtle but Significant Changes for Japan
The popular Toyota RAV4 receives a refresh for its 2025 model year in Japan, marking what could be its final iteration before a full generational change. While not a radical redesign, these updates bring noticeable improvements and a shift in drivetrain options.
All-Wheel Drive Takes Center Stage
The most significant change is the discontinuation of front-wheel-drive (FWD) variants in the Japanese market. For 2025, all gasoline RAV4s now come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD), while the self-charging hybrid exclusively features Toyota's E-Four AWD system (already standard on the plug-in hybrid). This move emphasizes Toyota's focus on enhanced capability and potentially simplifies production.
Refined Aesthetics and Added Features
While exterior and interior design remain largely unchanged, the hybrid models sport a new look. The distinctive blue Toyota emblem has been replaced with a standard emblem, accompanied by a new HEV badge (featuring a blue dot) on the tailgate. This aligns the RAV4 hybrids with Toyota's broader branding strategy.
All Japanese trims receive an upgrade in standard features. Drivers can now enjoy Blind Spot Monitoring, Parking Support Brake, a larger 10.54-inch touchscreen with Connected Navigation, and convenient puddle lights integrated into the side mirrors. Interestingly, the plug-in hybrid model reportedly switches to a steel spare wheel, potentially as a cost-saving measure.
Pricing and Availability
The updated 2025 RAV4 is available to order in Japan, starting at ¥3,237,300 ($21,600) for the base gasoline X trim and reaching ¥5,661,700 ($37,700) for the top-of-the-line Z trim with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. The popular Adventure Off-Road Package II special edition continues to be offered.
Production commences on December 16th for gasoline and hybrid versions, with the plug-in hybrid following on January 6th.
